Home Owner Tip for the Winter

Home Owner Tip for the Winter

Make sure you protect your biggest purchase.  Yes, your home.  Most people know to have their Heat/AC checked by a licensed HVAC technician twice a year.  Another good seasonal prevention item is to take care to turn off your exterior hose bibs.  It’s not as simple as turning them off on the outside.  Whether you own a home in Fairfax County Virginia, Montgomery County Maryland or even in the District of Washington DC, you may experience some cold weather.  With the cold temperatures you need to make sure you’re not putting your home at risk of having frozen pipes.  If water gets trapped inside your pipes from your exterior hose bibs, it can freeze, and cost the pipes to burst.

So avoid this and follow a simple procedure before it gets too cold.  You don’t need to water your lawn in the winter anyway 🙂

Step 1 – turn off your water to your exterior hose bibs from the inside of your home.  These shut off valves are usually, but not always, in the utility room of your home.

Step 2 – remove any hoses from your exterior hose bibs

Step 3 – open your exterior hose bibs.  This will allow any left over water to flow out of the hose bibs, or at the very least have room to expand if it does freeze as the temperature drops.

So whether you have real estate in Tysons Corner, McLean, Vienna, or own Real Estate somewhere in Montgomery County Maryland, or even real estate in Washington DC – the procedure is the same.  A simple 3 step process to protect your home from having frozen pipes in the cold winter temperatures.
